The Management Learning Division of the Police College, in collaboration with the Civil Service Training Development Institute, has developed an e-learning package on "Coaching and Mentoring for Police Inspectorate Officers", in line with the Force's policy on development of officers' professionalism.

The package aims at enhancing inspectorate officers' knowledge and skills of coaching and mentoring.

"Coaching" refers to a process with which a coach learns specific skills and knowledge related to his or her work. A good coach should have a good understanding of the coaching process and good knowledge of the variety of styles, skills and techniques that are appropriate in the context of coaching.

"Mentoring" refers to a developmental relationship in which a more experienced officer - the mentor - helps a less experienced officer - the mentee - develop personal capability and career. A good mentor should possess the skills to build up a friendly relationship with, and develop the potential of, the mentee. Successful coaching and mentoring will improve not only individual officers' duty performance, but also their all-round development. Therefore, effective coaching and mentoring will benefit the Force as a whole.

The package has been uploaded onto the Learning Portal of the Police College website. Officers who have successfully completed the e-learning package and the quizzes will be presented with an e-Certificate online. Feedback is most welcomed and may be sent to Superintendent Josephine Lau Wai-mun by email (sp-ml@police.gov.hk).
