Commissioner Tang King-shing recently attended the 78th INTERPOL General Assembly in Singapore as a member of the National Central Bureau China (NCB China) delegation. Accompanying him on the trip were Director of Crime and Security Lee Ka-chiu, Commercial Crime Bureau Chief Superintendent Cheung Kwai-kee, Narcotics Bureau Chief Superintendent John Ribeiro and Liaison Bureau Senior Superintendent Tang Ping-keung.

The leader of the delegation was Mr Meng Hongwai, Vice Minister of the Ministry of Public Security. Other members included representatives from INTERPOL Macao, China, led by Mr Mario Antonio Lameiras, Assistant of the Commissioner General of the Unitary Police Service of the Macao SAR.

Over 800 delegates from 153 member countries attended the assembly held between October 11 and 15, together with 22 observing institutions and organisations, including the United Nations and Europol. The Prime Minister of Singapore, Mr Lee Hsien-loong, gave an opening address at the assembly, pledging closer co-operation with INTERPOL and the United Nations in fighting international crime.

As a new initiative, an INTERPOL-United Nations Ministerial Meeting was held on the first two days of the General Assembly. Sixty-four Ministers from INTERPOL and member countries of the United Nations gathered at this meeting to discuss the crucial role of the Police in building sustainable peace and security and how the growing demand for effective international policing would be met in the years to come. At the conclusion of the Ministerial Meeting, an Outcome Declaration was signed covering the consensus that had been reached.

The end of the assembly saw a number of co-operation agreements being endorsed, and the adoption of 19 recommendations covering a wide range of topics, including enhancing the sharing of information and co-operation on operations, and enhancing law enforcement capability and engaging partnership.
