Personnel Services and Staff Relations Branch, in conjunction with Police arts and sports clubs, organised the Healthy Lifestyle Carnival 2009 at the Police Sports and Recreation Club on October 11 to promote physical fitness and mental alertness among Force members.

During the four-hour programme, 25 sports clubs and 13 arts clubs designed and provided a total of 38 fun games for teams formed by 16 Major Formations. To encourage participation in healthy lifestyle activities, family members were also invited this year to take part in the fun games. Thousands of regular and auxiliary officers, civilians and their families turned up to support the carnival.

Acting Commissioner Yam Tat-wing, Senior Directorate Group members and many Formation Commanders lent full support to the carnival. Mr Yam presented Certificate of Police Volunteer Services Award to 46 police volunteers, prizes to the three winning teams, and the Award of Sportsmanship.

Introduced this year, the Award of Sportsmanship accords recognition to the Major Formation who showed endurance, determination, team spirit and a proper attitude towards the rules of the games and other game players.

Tough competition saw Security Wing clinching the overall championship, followed by Police College and New Territories North as first and second runners-up respectively. The Award of Sportsmanship went to New Territories South.

A ceremony, together with a tea reception, was held after the award presentation to celebrate the Force's performance at the 2009 World Police and Fire Games. Force winners of the Games met with loud applause for their performances when they marched onto the stage.

This year, a Councils' Night was held right after the carnival for members of the arts and sports clubs. Apart from culinary delights, the members were also treated to the talent performances by their clubs.
