The 2010 World Expo, scheduled to be held in Shanghai from May to October next year, is expected to attract more than 70 million local and overseas visitors. With the theme: "Better City, Better Life", the Shanghai Municipal Government has built 153 exhibition halls along the Huangpu River to accommodate forums, performances, and celebrations.

To enhance security for the World Expo, the Shanghai Public Security Bureau (PSB) invited Superintendent George Lee of Key Points and Search Division, Operations Wing, and eight members of the Force Search Unit to attend a tactical exchange at the Shanghai Public Security College from October 12 to 21. Twenty-nine full-time instructors from sub-county bureaux and crossing checkpoints were also present at this exchange.

The modern college is the nation's only qualified higher vocational institution on public security. Its Tactical Training Complex and simulated street facilities provide an excellent venue for practical exercises. The giant 10-metre high monument erected at the college entrance is inscribed with the motto: "Upholding the Future of Public Security Work". According to the college's Principal, Mr Zheng Wanxin, the inscription fully illustrates the college's mission of equipping the public security personnel with skill and knowledge.

The exchange programme covered defensive searches of venues, vehicles, and roads, as well as security screening, classroom theories, and practical training. All participants had to pass assessments of search skill, equipment handling, and practical exercises, as well as written tests before getting certificates of attendance. They were expected to pass on what they had learned to more than 8,000 officers so as to meet the security needs of the World Expo.

At a closing ceremony, Superintendent Lee said he is confident that the Shanghai PSB would fulfil its mission for the World Expo.
