Crime Kowloon West (KW) Regional Headquarters held two workshops on video recording interviews on November 13 and 16 for District Special Duty Squad officers in KW, who have missed basic investigation training or the Special Duty Squad Course before being posted to their units.

Chief Inspector Suen Suet-ying from Crime KW hopes District Special Duty Squad officers would master the skills and procedures of video recording interviews, thereby enhancing their confidence in interviewing detained persons on video.

At the workshop, Senior Superintendent Leung Ka-ming from Crime KW Regional Headquarters briefed officers on the concept and purposes of the workshop, while Detective Senior Inspector Au Yeung Siu-kong from Regional Crime Unit (RCU) KW Regional Headquarters gave lectures and conducted training for a practical exercise. The training covered the procedures and arrangements related to video recording interviews, strategies of questioning suspects, and use of video recording equipment.

Videotapes on genuine crime cases were played for officers to enhance their knowledge of interviewing detained persons. At the same time, the officers got a better understanding of, via role playing and experience sharing, the problems and challenges they may encounter in their jobs.

At the end of the workshop, the audience appreciated the importance and advantages of interviewing detained persons with video recording. Police Constable Yan Tat-fu from Yau Tsim District Special Duty Squad considered the workshop very useful for his job.

RCU KW Regional Headquarters will regularly organise workshops of a similar nature, and will make them available to other formations, including Traffic KW and officers on loan to crime investigation teams.

The workshop covers both theories and a practical exercise for District Special Duty Squad officers
