The final of the "Junior Police Call (JPC) Anti-drug Old Song New Lyrics Competition" was held in the Police Headquarters Auditorium on November 21. Organised by the Police Public Relations Branch (PPRB) and sponsored by the Beat Drugs Fund, the event was one of the major JPC activities to prevent drug abuse by teenagers.

The contestants taking part in the competition considered the problem of youth drug abuse, made use of their creativity, and then came up with anti-drug messages. PPRB hopes all the contestants would spread anti-drug messages to their peers and the community whether their entries to the contest are successful or not.

The competition has enjoyed the enormous support of local music companies and musicians, both of whom have authorised the use of 16 local pop songs in the contest. The contest started in July with a great response from 400 JPC members who joined either individually or as groups. Eventually, 20 outstanding entries advanced to the final.

Attending the final as officiating guests were a member of the Action Committee Against Narcotics Dr Hui Pak-kwan; renowned lyricist, Mr Cheng Kwok-kong; famous Disc Jockey, Miss Wong Tin-yee; popular musicians, Mr Peco Chui and Ng Pak-yin, and PPRB Chief Superintendent Ng Ka-sing.

In his speech, Mr Ng pointed out that there were 1,153 reported cases of serious drug offences involving teenagers under 21 last year while there were 922 similar cases in the first three quarters of this year, arousing the concern of the Force. To tackle this problem, the Force would continue to co-operate with the community to make youth see the harmful effects of drugs, he stressed.

Following tough competition, Tsuen Wan District (TWDIST) captured championship of lyrics writing while Sham Shui Po and Tai Po Districts took the second and third places. Sham Shui Po also won the Gold Award for live performance, followed by Tsuen Wan and Tai Po with Silver and Bronze respectively.
