The Police Karate-do Club (PKDC) held a Karate-do Tournament in the Police Sports and Recreation Club (PSRC) on November 8 to promote physical health and community engagement. About 100 karate-do practitioners from five karate-do dojos (training centres), including PKDC representatives and community sports clubs, participated in over 20 events. The majority of the contestants were children and youngsters, the youngest one being aged four. Many of them are children of police officers.

The tournament provided an opportunity for the contestants to make new friends and exchange their karate-do expertise, besides being a valuable family activity.

To achieve the purpose of engaging the community, the PKDC invited a lot of sports club members to participate in the tournament, so as to enlist their support for the activities organised by the Force.

PKDC Chairman, Superintendent Terence Young, pointed out that karate-do is a barehanded self-defence skill. "Its aim is to build up self-confidence and determination. Through vigorous training, practitioners can strengthen their body coordination and responsiveness. It also helps recognise one's potential and improve one's physical health," he said.

Over the years, the PKDC has been providing a wide range of karate-do training for police officers and their family members. Earlier this year, four PKDC representatives, Mr Yuen Kwok-kwong, Ms Wong Hau-yan, Ms Wong Chui-man and Mr Chan Chi-ming, won four gold and one bronze medals in the World Police and Fire Games in Canada.

The tournament also celebrated the PKDC's 30th Anniversary when many retired officers who are former members turned up to lend support to the event. One of the old members recalled: "The first dojo of the club was set up in the former Central Police Station in Hollywood Road in 1979. After I had received karate training, I felt much more confident on the beat as I could defend myself with my bare hands!"

The PKDC is committed to providing quality physical training and promoting healthy lifestyle by conducting training sessions on Friday evening and junior training sessions on Saturday in PSRC. For enquiries, contact Senior Inspector Wong Kwok-wah on 2773-5285 or email: ip-sip-ai-kw@police.gov.hk.
