CP thanks officers over EAG

Commissioner Tang King-shing has expressed his personal appreciation to all officers involved in successfully facilitating the smooth running of the 5th East Asian Games (EAG) in Hong Kong.

In his message, Mr Tang said: "The EAG was the first large-scale international multi-sports event held in Hong Kong and created new and unique challenges for the Force in respect of planning, liaison and deployment of resources to cover a wide-range of venues. By necessity regions and districts were heavily involved in planning for the event from the outset and I was delighted to observe the effective communication that was

established between participating formations and relevant stakeholders to ensure we were well prepared and a consistent approach was adopted.

"Whilst planners at all levels ensured that an appropriate framework was in place, we would not have been able to achieve our overall objectives for the EAG without the hard work and commitment of all frontline staff over the past two weeks. Every regular, auxiliary and civilian officer involved played a part in ensuring a safe, secure and welcoming environment was provided for those participating in the EAG and that we were also able to successfully fulfil our normal day-to-day responsibilities to the community.

"Thank you for your efforts and I congratulate you all on a job well done!"

Officers show flying colours

The nine-day East Asian Games (EAG) has just successfully concluded. Being the host, Hong Kong has sent a delegation of 438 members to compete in 22 sports. Among these athletes were five police officers.

Artistic Cycling - Samuel Yu

In the men's artistic cycling events, Tai Po District Investigation Team Inspector Samuel Yu took gold in the pairs event, and silver in singles.

He started preparation for the EAG in June and twice went overseas for special training. Samuel was invited to take part in the EAG Torch Relay on August 29. In Portugal in November, he made history by winning a bronze medal in the World Indoor Cycling Championships, the first ever medal taken by an Asian.

Samuel was grateful to the Force management for giving him great flexibility in accommodating his work schedule and giving active support. In an interview with OffBeat, he especially pointed out: "Officers had put in a lot of efforts in ensuring the EAG be run in a safe and secure environment."

Rugby - Tsang Hing-hung

Police Tactical Unit Hong Kong Island (HKI) Police Constable (PC) Tsang Hing-hung is a member of the Hong Kong Rugby Team, which took silver in the EAG. After the victory, PC Tsang, together with his HK team members, left for Europe to take part in a series of matches. OffBeat wishes him and the HK team every success.

Hockey - Swalikh Mohammed

HKI Regional Intelligence Unit Senior Inspector Swalikh Mohammed told OffBeat: "In the bronze medal game against China, we played a superb tactical game that surprised China and the crowd at King's Park. This is the biggest achievement in our careers as Hong Kong hockey players."

Marathon - Jonny Lai

Wong Tai Sin District Patrol Sub-unit PC Jonny Lai is a veteran in marathon. He was one of the two Hong Kong runners competing in Half Marathon event. This event was the most important one he had ever taken part in Hong Kong, with many citizens, friends and colleagues giving him a big hand along the route.

"As host we have received outstanding support. I managed to complete the run in one hour and 16 minutes," he noted.

400 m hurdles - Alex Fan

Tsim Sha Tsui Division Patrol Sub-unit Commander Alex Fan passed out from the Police College in September. He was the only Hong Kong runner in the men's 400 m hurdles.

He trained hard with his coach after work after being chosen as a member of the Hong Kong delegation in August. He managed sixth place in the event but thoroughly enjoyed the Games as it was a very important competition for local athletes.

Force joins hands in creating legend

At the invitation of the East Asian Games (Hong Kong) Company, the Force took part in both the Opening and Closing Ceremonies of the EAG, with the Police College sending a 35-member Guard of Honour for the ceremonies. After the college had exchanged views with the production company of the ceremonies and offered advice on protocol, the solemn flag raising and oath taking of the spectacular Opening Ceremony were successfully completed, demonstrating to the world Hong Kong's innovation and creativity.

The Guard of Honour, led by Chief Inspector (Drill and Musketry) Tse Ping-leung, mainly composed recruits of Intake 2057, who marched off in November. Having fulfilled their first major duty, these officers took pride in, and felt honoured of, taking part in a historical event as representatives of the Force.
