Breakthrough for JPC Advanced Leaders |
||
Forty Junior Police Call (JPC) Advanced Leaders left for Singapore on October 23 on a five-day visit to attend the "Advanced Leaders Singapore National Police Cadet Corps (NPCC) Exchange Training Camp". JPC Headquarters has taken six months to organise this trip in a bid to implement the recommendations of the JPC 2nd Review on enhancement of training modules, establishment of an award system, and provision of overseas exchange programmes for outstanding members. The exchange camp consisted of three major aspects: attending a training programme provided by the Singapore NPCC; learning from the Singapore Police Force, and experiencing cultural characteristics. In order to motivate learning and raise personal quality, participants of the training programme were divided into four teams to undertake different tasks with self-discipline and teamwork. The teams' observations are as follows.
"In the NPCC training camp on Pulau Ubin (an island), putting up tents in darkness, cooking, canoeing and high rope course were not as challenging as 'Confident Jump' and 'Flying Fox' - 'aerial runway'. "'Flying Fox' is the longest dual-cable 'aerial runway' in Singapore, and we needed to slide down over 30 metres. Not only could it boost our courage, but also help us overcome fear of heights and know our own abilities. Moreover, in the 'Confident Jump', we were instructed to jump from a jetty of about five metres high into the sea. For the members who cannot swim, it was a major test, but with the support and encouragement of their teammates, they took a small step forward - jumping into the sea, but took a big leap in self-confidence."
"We played the roles of Hong Kong Police Ambassadors during visits to local police units, including Police Headquarters, Police Heritage, Road Safety Park, Coast Guard, and Police Dog Unit. The most impressive one was visit to the Police Dog Unit. During a demonstration, two Advanced Leaders volunteered to take part in a performance to experience of being 'bitten' by police dogs. Though they put on protective gear and were taken care of by dog handlers, we were scared but felt excited. Later we visited a local Neighbourhood Police Unit to study their community policing programme."
"We took the opportunity to experience the different cultures of Singapore, which put emphasis on integration and fairness. The integration and harmony among different cultures are exactly what our Advanced Leaders need to learn."
"Besides NPCC's warm reception, we also experienced the need of mutual respect and understanding. The teammates developed synergy and displayed esprit de corps. After the trip, some of the Advanced Leaders have become more proactive. We hope this spirit would continue for the sustainability of the JPC scheme."
