Woman Police Constable (WPC) Li Shuk-yin of the Joint Financial Intelligence Unit (JFIU) of Narcotics Bureau has recently graduated with a Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of London after a three-year part-time study. After attending the graduation ceremony in London in March, she returned to work, eagerly applying legal knowledge to her job.

WPC Li
joined the Force in 2005 and was posted to JFIU in December 2009 from
Tsuen Wan District. She has been working in an analysis team where she
is responsible for analysing suspicious transaction reports and
intelligence before passing them to an investigation unit. Her job
often involves dealing with legal documents or enquiries from the legal
sector. She said that although the course marked a very demanding period of her career, her professionalism and ability to make a contribution in JFIU had certainly been enhanced. In addition, the course helped her acquire the knowledge to communicate and interact with different professional sectors. On a personal note, she feels more confident and capable in overcoming challenges. She also hopes her newly acquired qualification would help her attain her goal - advancing to the Inspectorate. About the officer's part-time studies, JFIU Chief Inspector Stewart McGlynn said: "The issues we deal with in JFIU are often complex and handling legal documents and related enquiries are commonplace. We have a high percentage of graduate JPOs deployed here and also a number of officers undertaking related academic studies. We encourage and support them where we can as there is no doubt lifelong learning will improve an officer's knowledge and ability." While a recent recruitment exercise has just closed, the unit continues to offer an ideal career opportunity for those JPOs who consider they have the professional ability and application to succeed in the challenging field of financial intelligence. The culture of lifelong learning has taken root within the Force, with many officers at different ranks taking up part-time studies in their free time. |
