The Director of Marine, Mr Roger Tupper, presented his commendation on March 24 to three officers of Marine Outer Waters District (MOWDIST) - Senior Police Constable (SPC) Fan Wing-fat and Police Constables (PC) Mak Tung-tsuen (presently attached to Police Tactical Unit D Company) and Si Man-ching - for saving lives in the sea last year.

SPC Fan and PC Mak were on duty onboard a Police vessel on the night of May 16 last year when they responded to an "attempt suicide" case that happened about 300 metres off a rocky beach near Hau Wong Temple, Tung Chung, North Lantau. Upon arrival at the scene, a woman was found in difficulty in the sea, but no rescue vessel was able to approach her due to shallow water. In view of the urgency of the situation, both officers immediately jumped into the sea and pulled the semi-conscious woman to safety.

On October 4 last year, PC Si was onboard Police Launch (PL) 6, which was racing to Tung Lung Chau after receiving a report that a person had fallen into the sea. Upon arrival, a man was found struggling in rough sea about 50 metres offshore and in danger of drowning after being suddenly washed away by waves whilst fishing. When PL 6 was unable to approach the man due to heavy seas, PC Si immediately did what his two colleagues had done.

On hand to congratulate the officers at the commendation presentation were MOWDIST Commander Roderick Colson, Deputy District Commander Siu Koon-yiu, Marine West Divisional Commander Ling Wai-po, and Marine East Assistant Divisional Commander (Operations) Leung Chi-hang.

Six other PCs also received the Director of Marine's Commendation for saving lives in the sea
