Book Name: "Stories from Kowloon West"
Published by: Kowloon West Region Arts and Culture Working Group
Chief Editor: Chan Wing-hong

Is a good book hard to come by?  Check out  the Resource Centre of your formation for this book — “Stories from Kowloon West”, which we are going to recommend here.  You may find the book name familiar because it has been compiled from 13 “Stories from Kowloon West” serial articles carried in OffBeat.

Director of Management Services Tang How-kong (former Kowloon West Regional Commander), who was the initiator of the “Stories from Kowloon West” series, is pleased that with the great efforts made by members of the Kowloon West (KW) Region Arts and Culture Working Group, the book has been finally published without any hitch.  Mr Tang hoped the book would provide police officers and members of the public (especially young people) with encouragement and education.

Gripping Police stories

The book is a reflection of the lives of 13 serving and retired officers who told their stories of overcoming adversities in lives and bouncing back from crises, as well as the ups and downs of police life. As they are all real “police stories”, colleagues would share the feelings of the officers in the stories while reading the book. Members of the public would also enjoy reading the book and find that it is a very special kind of “Chicken Soup for the Soul”, which offers encouragement and support.

As a matter of fact, there have been a lot of feedback since the publication of the “Stories from Kowloon West” series in OffBeat. The stories have attracted many readers and  a wide discussion.  Some colleagues even took the initiative to furnish the editorial committee of the KW Region Arts and Culture Working Group with good stories.

Good stories and good dishes are alike, the aftertastes of which deserve to be recalled to mind and pondered over.  Senior Superintendent (SSP) Chan Wing-hong, who was the chairman of the Working Group (the chief editor of “Stories from Kowloon West”), hopes the book would give everybody inspirations and would even cheer up those who are struggling in life.

“Beyond our expectations, we have received a lot of good feedback since the release of the first story in OffBeat in July last year, which was heartening news for the working group.  We gradually extended the series to a total of 13 articles and decided to compile a book with the aim of spreading these encouraging stories, particularly among young people and imbuing them with correct values and life attitude.  Moreover, I would like to take this opportunity to thank the officers featured in the stories, the editorial committee and the readers for their support,” SSP Chan said.

Formed by officers of KW Region, the KW Region Arts and Culture Working Group is dedicated to promoting various kinds of cultural and arts activities as well as fostering Force values.

The book also features a lot of precious pictures, such as those on the award of a medal to Station Sergeant Yeung Chi-fai by the Queen of the United Kingdom, the award of a commendation to Station Sergeant Chan Chi-man by the last Hong Kong Governor Chris Patten and the presentation of an award to Senior Police Constable Lee Kam-keung by the Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose S K Lee.

In addition, the book contains paintings by Chan Yuk-kuen, a retired Woman Senior Inspector as well as a contemporary painter. The advisor of the Hong Kong Police Painting and Calligraphy Club, Mr Ma Yun-hin, has made an inscription on the cover of the book, adding much lustre to it.

Community support

The book has enjoyed support of the community after its launching. The Lok Sin Tong Benevolent Society Kowloon and Chairman of the Kowloon City District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Pang Hiu-ming, very much admired the content and purpose of the book. Thanks to their sponsorship, more copies of the book have been printed for the benefit of more people.
