The International Commanders' Programme Course Manager of the National Policing Improvement Agency (NPIA) in the UK, Mr Simon Stevenson, stopped off in Hong Kong on April 29 and took the opportunity to rekindle friendship.

He called at Sheung Shui Police Station and met with Tai Po District (TPDIST) Commander Bernie So and Senior Superintendent (Operations) Kowloon West Eddie Wong. The old pals reminisced about their teaching at the Agency and exchanged views on topical policing issues.

Mr Stevenson showed a great interest in community policing in Hong Kong when Sheung Shui Divisional Commander Pat Laidler introduced TPDIST's Project "Eyes and Ears", which is a recently launched initiative to promote community engagement and enhance intelligence gathering. Mr Stevenson said he found the exchange very useful and was impressed by both the Force's success in community policing and TPDIST's policing efforts.

Superintendent Laidler told Mr Stevenson that Project "Eyes and Ears" would enhance the communication between Police and the public, as well as frontline officers' communication skills. In reply, Mr Stevenson said he subscribed to the concept of community policing, and would draw reference from the Force's best practices in community policing, including the project, for his teaching on the subject.
