Sixty-four officers from five Regional Traffic Formations have been recognised for their professionalism, diligence and teamwork in combatting drink driving.

Speaking at a presentation ceremony on May 19, Chief Superintendent Mike Demaid-Groves of Traffic Headquarters noted that drink driving was a key component of the Commissioner's Operational Priorities for road safety.

Since introduction of the Random Breath Test (RBT) in February 2009, the number of accidents involving drink driving has dropped by almost 60 percent. Nearly 60,000 drivers have been tested and more than 400 drivers have been arrested in RBT operations. The efforts of frontline traffic officers in combatting drink driving were reducing traffic accidents and injuries and also saving lives, CSP Demaid-Groves noted.

The Legislative Council will consider amendments to the drink driving legislation this month. Under the amendments, drivers convicted of drink driving could lose their licence for six months on first conviction, and higher the amount of alcohol detected above the prescribed limit, the greater the penalties will be.

Police will be conducting special RBT operations throughout the World Cup tournament from June 11 to July 12. Traffic Headquarters’ message to everyone is: "If you drink, don’t drive".
