Kowloon City District (KCDIST) has run a five-day Junior Police Call (JPC) Foot Drill Instructors' Course for 25 regular police officers, six auxiliary police officers, and five JPC members and volunteers.

According to KCDIST Training and Staff Relations Officer, Lee Chung-kin, the course was part of Kowloon West (KW) Region's initiatives to engage the community. The course was originally planned for police officers and JPC members from KW only, but owing to a good response, the course was extended to non-KW applicants.

At the invitation of KCDIST, the Chief Drill and Musketry Inspector, Chief Inspector (CIP) Tse Ping-leung, acted as course consultant, giving advice on composition of the instruction panel, course design, and the passing out parade at the conclusion of the course.

The course instructors were serving or former drill instructors of the Police College, teaching course members in their spare time.  The course contents included foot drill, foot drill instructional skills, flag raising protocols, skills of flag raising at the Golden Bauhinia Square, parade procedures, assessment, and passing-out parade.

Teaching of the course took the forms of lecturing, group practising, watching the flagraising parade at the Golden Bauhinia Square, and practising flagraising at the Police College. On the last day of the course, course members consolidated what they learned by taking part in a flagraising demonstration and passing-out parade.

A passing-out parade was held to mark conclusion of the course, with Yau Tsim District Commander (DC) Lau Yip-shing taking the salute in the capacity of Chairman of the JPC Central Advisory Board.

Sergeant Wong Lok-on from Traffic KW, who was the commander at the passing out parade, said that in the course, he learned whilst teaching. "I learned that I must first train up myself before I can do my best for the trainees. If I can do so, both myself and my trainees will benefit," he noted.

JPC Advanced Leader Suen Chi-chung from Mong Kok District attributed the smooth running of the course to KCDIST's planning and course instructors' enthusiasm, saying that he had learned a lot from them.

All the course members passed their assessment, and were presented with certificates by DC Lau. KCDIST Deputy Commander Wong Chun-chin presented letters of appreciation to the course instructors as Chairman of the KW JPC Leader Corps Advisory Committee.

Thanking the course instructors and trainees for taking part in the course in their free time, DC Lau said foot drill helped develop JPC members' discipline and team spirit, and instructors could instil values in them.

KCDIST will organise a three-and-a-half-day JPC Foot Drill Course for JPC members in KW this summer, to be delivered by JPC foot drill instructors.
