At the
two international Police Commissioners' Conferences Commissioner Tang
King-shing attended earlier, the consensus of police chiefs was that
police officers at all ranks need emotional intelligence and good
communication skills to do their jobs better. "We are pleased that the
Force has been providing psychological competency training to our
officers since 2005 and it is encouraging to get international
recognition," said Police College Director Kevin Woods.
Under psychological competency training, there are various training
programmes, e-learning courseware, and self-learning materials on eight
areas: Emotional Regulation, Interpersonal Communication Skills,
Conflict Management, Victim Psychology, Counselling Skills as a Police
Supervisor/Colleague, Stress Management in Police Work, Healthy
Lifestyle and Psychological Skills in Suspect Interviewing.
The crux of psychological competency training is to combine practical
police experience with psychological expertise to better equip police
officers. So, the College has formed partnership with the
University of Hong Kong, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and
Lingnan University to develop training materials and conduct training
and assessment for Police trainers, who then teach trainees these
topics.
"There are many cases showing that our officers have learned useful
knowledge and skills from the training to help their daily policing
duties," said Deputy Director Gavin Brown.
Winners honoured
The ASTD Board of Directors honoured the winners at an awards ceremony
last month in Chicago during ASTD's International Conference &
Exposition. Force Training Officer Cammie Leung and Senior Inspector
(Training Projects) Lam Chiu-chung represented the Force at the
ceremony. They also discussed the award winning practice of
psychological competency training with international delegates during
the Awards Fair of the conference.
