Having participated in yearlong activities of the Police Mentorship Programme (PMP) under the guidance of 46 police mentors, 113 police mentees from 10 local tertiary institutes attended a ceremony at Police Officers' Club on June 11 to mark the successful conclusion of PMP 2009/10. Officiating at the ceremony was Acting Director of Personnel and Training Chau Kwok-leung. PMP 2009-10 owes its success to the dedication of the mentors and the enthusiasm and active participation of all mentees.

The Force joined hands with eight local tertiary institutes to kick off the PMP in 2004. Two adjustments were made to the programme as it proceeded to the 6th year of operation last year. One was extending of the programme to include Hong Kong Shue Yan University and Open University of Hong Kong, while the second was making the programme available to all non-final year students enrolled in full-time courses. The extension allowed more students to get interaction and communication with their senior alumni working at various posts in the Force.

Last year, the mentees took part in various activities, such as Summer Job Attachment, Summer Day Camp, passing-out parade, Probationary Inspector Selection Seminar and visits to Traffic Hong Kong Island, Wan Chai District and Border District. Active mentees also worked as volunteers at the Education and Careers Expo and the PMP Inauguration Ceremony in February and April respectively. Through PMP activities, the mentees not only understood police work and Force values, but also gained an insight into police operations and the roles of junior inspectors.

Speaking at the ceremony, Mr Chau pointed out that more and more mentees were applying to join the Force, adding that a total of 55 have joined as Police Inspector. He also encouraged the mentees to have a righteous mind, determination and broad vision to face challenges and responsibilities.

To express their gratitude to their mentors, the mentees staged singing performances and a drama during the ceremony. In particular, they are grateful to the mentors for sparing their free time to help them set goals for their studies, careers and future.

The closing ceremony marked completion of an important stage in life for the mentees. Mentors' guidance has helped them lay a solid foundation for planning for the future. In fact, a number of them have already applied to join the Force, hoping to serve society upon their graduation.
