Tai Po District (TPDIST) has rolled out its Project Eyes and Ears as a community policing measure to detect and prevent crime, and to strengthen communication with the local community.

On October 13, TPDIST Commander So Kam-tong, accompanied by Sheung Shui Divisional Commander, Tai Po District Police Community Relations Officer and Tai Po Divisional Task Force Sub-Unit officers, called on the Fanling District Rural Committee and introduced Project Eyes and Ears. Mr So opened the meeting with the chairman and members of the committee by outlining the concept and objectives of the project.

At the same time, Task Force sub-unit officers described how Tai Po Division, as a measure of the project, had stepped up patrols in Tai Po Tau and Shui Wai Tsuen to prevent burglary after a large number of villagers there had left for the Mainland to worship their ancestors. The villagers were so pleased with this special measure that they later expressed their appreciation to the officers involved.

During the meeting, the police also encouraged the villagers to install CCTV to get the best crime prevention results. Village representatives attending the meeting commented favourable on, and pledged full support for, Project Eyes and Ears.

Concluding his visit, Mr So hoped that officers would, through more pro-active contacts with the local community, accurately assess the crime trend. "Besides preventing and combating crime, Project Eyes and Ears would also boost the partnership between the police and the local community," he noted.
