Appreciation Corner

Dear Sir,

In May this year, my company was awarded the project, "Foundation for the Proposed Residential Development", in Lee Tung Street, Wan Chai, by the Urban Renewal Authority.

To enhance security at the worksite, a round-the-clock security guarding service has been hired from a security company with hoarding fully erected to fence off the site from members of the public. On top of that, CCTV surveillance systems have been installed at the site entrance and other high-risk locations to provide coverage.

Months ago, some street dwellers were found taking refuge inside the covered walkway of Amoy Street near the junction of Johnston Road, an emergency escape route that we provide to the residents of a residential building. As utilities have to be installed at that location, our site operatives have on several occasions requested them to vacate the walkway for works to be carried out but our requests were all ignored. Their continuous presence has caused a nuisance and obstruction to the site operatives in accomplishing the works and posed a hazard to the site in terms of security. To tackle this issue, a written request had been made to the local police station to enlist assistance. At the present time, Senior Inspector Bryan Kong of the Wan Chai Task Force Sub-unit is working on our request.

On Sunday, September 26, a party of PTU officers on anti-crime patrol at Amoy Street spotted a man breaking open a piece of hoarding inside the covered walkway with a prickle bar. The officers at once tried to arrest the man but he put up a struggle. Eventually the officers overpowered him and seized the prickle bar. Other than damage to the hoarding, the site suffered no loss.

Had it not been the alertness and devotion to duty of the officers in stopping the man from breaking the hoarding in order to sneak into the site, expensive property would have most likely been stolen.

While internal measures are being taken to plug security loopholes, I, on behalf of the site management, would like to express our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the following officers of PTU No 1 Platoon, E Company, for their efforts in maintaining Hong Kong a safe and stable society and to present them with silver plate and banner as souvenirs:

Company Commander Ho Ka-fei;

Acting Station Sergeant Au Ka-pong;

Sergeant Woo Siu-hong;

PC Lui Chung-yiu; and

WPC Lok Lai-man.

Eric Yu

Security Manager
