At the invitation of Key Points and Search Division (KPS), four officers - Wu Yingcan, Qiu Jinghua, Zhang Shouping and Fang Yingjing of the Shenzhen Special Police Contingent (SSPC) - came to Hong Kong from November 8 to 12 and joined Search Cadre members in attending the five-day Module 3 of the Diploma in Search and Venue Security programme at Sha Ling Search Training School. This advanced module offers the trainees more knowledge of planning a security operation.

In August this year, a KPS training team delivered, for security of the 2011 Shenzhen Universiade, a five-day basic search training programme to SSPC officers in Shenzhen.

During their training in Sha Ling, the trainees learned advanced room search, vehicle search, principles of various types of security equipment, planning of large-scale security operations, occupational safety and health knowledge, updated anti-terrorism knowledge, search for missing persons in rural areas, food safety, and behavioural observation techniques. The SSPC officers' performances in the training impressed both the instructors and Search Cadre members.

KPS Chief Inspector Tang Chi-ming told OffBeat: "To boost the exposures of our search officers, we will try our best to have more exchanges on search and venue security with other law enforcement agencies. Through these exchanges, we hope to take our search capability to new heights."

Speaking on behalf of his delegation, Mr Wu said: "The exchange has provided a solid foundation for security training for the Universiade. It is a privilege for us to learn advanced techniques and concepts from experienced instructors of the Key Points and Search Division of the Hong Kong Police. Armed with this training, we can return and start training the 8 000 or so security personnel and volunteers for the Universiade."

Cadre member Police Constable Ip Chi-on has described as "a most pleasant surprise" the opportunity to train up along with his Mainland counterparts.

The SSPC officers were presented with a certificate for their training with KPS. Local trainees were earlier awarded the basic search certificate by Assistant Commissioner (Operations) Wong Chi-hung after passing the 2nd module of the search course. These officers will sit for the written test of the advanced course early next year. Upon passing this hurdle, they will progress to the final module, which will involve group research and individual presentations. Upon completing all four modules, a trainee will be awarded a Diploma in Search and Venue Security, which is a Level 3 Qualification Framework attainment recognised by the Education Bureau.

The Shenzhen officers are expected to pass on what they have learned from KPS to security personnel for the Universiade
