During a visit to Marine Regional Headquarters on November 12, around 40 mentors and mentees of the Police Mentorship Programme 2010-11, coming from 10 local tertiary institutes, gained an insight into the various aspects of maritime policing.

Thanks to the arrangements made by Marine Deputy Regional Commander Chung Hung-fung, who is the Police Head Mentor, the mentees also got a better idea of Marine Region's operational priorities, work of the Small Boat Division and the professional qualifications possessed by Marine Police officers.

The visit started with a briefing given by Chief Inspector Joseph Li on law and procedures, craft handling, tactics and special tasks such as search and rescue, fire fighting, first-aid, crane operation, welding and cutting, and working in confined space. He also covered the Marine Training School and the professional qualifications officers have obtained.

The next stop was the Marine Regional Command and Control Centre, where Acting Chief Inspector Richard Barton-smith outlined the functions of the centre and explained how officers discharged their duties with advanced equipment and technology.

During the visit to Small Boat Division, the mentees learned from Superintendent Mark Anstiss and Senior Inspector Ken Choi the current situations of smuggling and illegal immigration, as well as mounting of search and rescue operations.

At the end of the visit, Ivan Hui, on behalf of the mentors and mentees, thanks Marine Region and Recruitment Division for arranging "a very interesting and informative tour" for them.
