As part of its ongoing effort to promote community harmony, Wan Chai District (WCHDIST) hosted an annual community dinner for local ethnic groups at Police Headquarters on October 8. Among the guests of honour were the Consul General of Indonesian, Consuls of Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand and Nepalese, presidents of the Islamic Union of Hong Kong, Hindu Temple and Sikh Temple as well as representatives from the International Social Service and the Hong Kong Integrated Nepalese Society.

Welcoming the guests, District Commander Au Chi-kwong praised the ethnic groups for their contributions to social stability and prosperity, and called on them to fully integrate into society. He also took the opportunity to introduce his two initiatives to further enhance police services for ethnic groups: employment of a Nepalese as a part-time Police Community Liaison Assistant and provision of Urdu language training for Wan Chai frontline officers.

The atmosphere of the evening reached the peak when the officiating guests pitched in to complete a jigsaw puzzle signifying community harmony in Wan Chai.

Attending the community dinner for the third time, High Court Judge Suffiad, who is the Chairman of the Islamic Union of Hong Kong, described the event as "a wonderful evening". He said he particularly enjoyed the puzzle game, which, he noted, was well thought out and underscored the significant achievement of community harmony in Wan Chai. Thanking WCHDIST for organising the gathering for ethnic groups, he said: "I'll definitely come for next year's annual community dinner."

Mr K. Sital, President of the Hindu Association, who was attending the reception for the first time, said Hong Kong is a metropolis with people of various religions and cultures. In this respect, he praised the Force for contributing to building a harmonious community.

Mr T. Wardoyo, Consul General of Indonesia, also expressed his appreciation to WCHDIST for creating "a warm and friendly atmosphere" at the dinner reception, and looked forward to seeing "this meaningful event" in future.
