PTU one of the finest police training establishments

Commissioner Tang King-shing has described the Police Tactical Unit (PTU) as one of the finest police training establishments in the world.

Addressing a PTU passing-out parade as a Reviewing Officer on December 3, he noted that PTU has "dedicated and professional staff, a modern and well-balanced training regime, and a wealth of proud history and traditions".

CP invited to inspect the Honour Guard

Having spent much of his early career in PTU, Mr Tang said he has "very fond" memories of serving in the "Blue Berets" and the "Flying Tigers". "Of course things have changed since the 'old days', but the critical role that PTU plays in keeping Hong Kong a safe and stable society and the 'spirit of PTU' remain intact," he added.

CP told the officers on parade: "You have completed 12 weeks of intensive and tough training as a PTU Company, with the Sergeants and Officers taking an extra tough four-week Cadre Course. You have been strictly tested and assessed and you have met the PTU standard with excellent results.  Now you have earned the privilege to wear the 'Blue Beret' and become an important part of the Force's tactical capability."

To serve with pride

"In recent years, Hong Kong has experienced rapid and drastic changes," Mr Tang further told the officers. "It is inevitable that you will encounter difficulties when you discharge your duties. As a member of one of the most professionally trained units in the Hong Kong Police, you must temper the sharpness you have acquired with the need to maintain your integrity to serve our citizens with pride.

"You should always be aware of and sensitive to the need to meet the public's increasing expectations in our rapidly changing society. You have to maintain effective communication with the community and understand their needs and strive for quality services and continuous improvements in your everyday work. Your achievement today has not come easily. I am sure the bonds of comradeship built up whilst under training will undoubtedly remain throughout your police careers and beyond.

"Graduates, you will soon begin your Regional Attachment and be involved in various types of operations, demonstrating the tactical capability and strength of the 'Blue Berets'. I am sure you will find your PTU life challenging."

Finally, CP congratulated members of the Yankee Company and award winners on successfully completing their training, and wished them all the best in their Regional Attachment.
