The Chairman of the 2010 Fight Crime Conference, Dr John Tse, appealed to the public on December 4 to continue actively participating in the fight against crime so that Hong Kong would remain an attractive place to live and work.

The conference is a biennial event organised by the Fight Crime Committee (FCC) to provide a forum for members of the FCC and District FCCs to exchange views. The theme of this year's conference was "Fight Crime, Beat Drugs - Hong Kong Cares".

The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, delivered an opening address at the conference and the Chief Secretary for Administration and Chairman of the FCC, Mr Henry Tang, gave a keynote speech.

Nearly 400 FCC and DFCC members exchanged views with representatives from policy bureaux and departments on the law and order situation and the ways to fight crime.

Other officials attending the conference were Secretary for Justice, Mr Wong Yan Lung, SC; Secretary for Security, Mr Ambrose S K Lee; Secretary for Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing; Secretary for Labour and Welfare, Mr Matthew Cheung; Commissioner of Correctional Services, Mr Sin Yat-kin; Director of Home Affairs, Mrs Pamela Tan, and Commissioner Tang King-shing.

Meanwhile, the Chief Secretary presented prizes to the champions and runners-up of the "Anti-shop Theft Comic Sticker Competition" organised by the Force and the Fight Crime Committee Publicity Sub-committee (FCCPSC).

Over 1 600 students from primary and secondary schools took part in the competition, which was launched in mid-September to encourage students to show their creative talents to disseminate anti-shop theft messages through comic stickers. The aim was to instil positive values in youth and remind them that a moment of greed can lead to a lifetime of regret, which is one of the themes of the Fight Crime Publicity Campaign 2010/11.

The first, second and third prize winners, together with five Merit Award winners, were selected according to their creativity and technique by an adjudication panel comprising renowned cartoonist Mr Aken Leung, Creative Director of Information Services Department, Ms Pamela Chan; Chief Curriculum Development Officer of Education Bureau, Mr Cheung Wing-hung; and FCCPSC Member, Mr Stanley Yeung.

The works of the secondary school section champion, Wong Tsz-ching, highlight the serious consequences of committing shop theft, delivering the message that shoplifting will cost one's prospect, integrity and dignity.

Beating off many older contestants, Primary two student Cheng Yu-tung clinched the championship of primary school section. Yu-tung hopes that those who have seen her works would not commit shoplifting.

The winning entries are on display at Police Headquarters until December 28. The champion drawings will be produced as stickers for display at convenience stores, supermarkets and retail outlets.
