Chief Inspector (CIP) Ip Chi-kuen and Senior Inspector (SIP) Kong Tsz-fung of Emergency Unit New Territories South (EU NTS) visited South Yorkshire Police, United Kingdom, from November 21 to 25, calling at different Police units and looking into police pursuit of vehicles.

At the beginning of 2008, South Yorkshire Police revised the guideline for police pursuits, with reference to the Human Right Acts and a Report on Road Traffic Accidents. The guideline balances the need to apprehend offenders and prevent crime whilst ensuring the pursuits will be conducted safely.

CIP Ip and SIP Kong, in attending an Advanced Driving Training Course as observers, were impressed by the application of pursuit tactics, the equipment used and practical training for police drivers. During the course, both officers boarded a police vehicle to watch a demonstration on high-speed pursuit of a vehicle. Moreover, SIP Kong attended a training session with local police officers on how to use  equipment to stop a fleeing vehicle. Furthermore, the two officers also paid a half-day visit to the South Yorkshire Police Air Support Unit and got a briefing on air support for police vehicle pursuits. They also had an exchange with South Yorkshire Police on experiences of other aspects of police work.

EU NTS Woman Superintendent Chan Chiu-ying, who initiated the overseas duty visit to South Yorkshire, is confident that what CIP Ip and SIP Kong had learned and observed from the visit would benefit their work.
