In a bid to enhance communication, operational effectiveness and working relationship, Marine Region hosted a luncheon gathering at Police Officers' Club on February 15 for officers from the maritime law enforcement agencies in Macau and Guangdong.

Director of Operations Hung Hak-wai attended the function as the guest of honour.

Also present were about 130 guests from the HKSAR Government, Guangdong Provincial Government and the Macau SAR Government.

The Mainland guests came from various maritime law enforcement agencies, including Guangdong Border Defence Bureau, Guangdong Sub-Administration of China Customs, Office for Combating Smuggling Guangdong Province, Anti-Smuggling Administrative Office of Shenzhen Municipal Government, Guangdong Marine and Fisheries Inspection Bureau and Liaison Office of the Central People's Government in the Hong Kong SAR. Macau representatives came from the Customs Service.

HKSAR Government Departments represented at the luncheon were Customs and Excise Department, Marine Department, Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department, Government Flying Service and Fire Services Department.

Speaking at the luncheon, Mr Hung thanked the maritime law enforcement agencies in Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong for maintaining law and order in Hong Kong, combating cross-boundary crimes, illegal immigration, smuggling and illegal cross-boundary fishing activities. He also expressed his appreciation to the agencies for maintaining close liaison and coordination in providing security measures for the 2010 Asian Games in Guangdong last year.

Mr Hung noted that the rapid economic developments on the Mainland had brought about closer ties among Hong Kong, Macau and Guangdong in terms of flows of passengers, cargo and information, which, he said, might create more opportunities for cross-boundary criminals. However, he believed that enhanced intelligence sharing and strengthened operational measures by the agencies of the three places would effectively combat any organised cross-boundary criminal activities.

"With the professionalism of, and close co-operation among, the agencies, law enforcement officers will be able to continue making a remarkable contribution to the stability and prosperity of the three places," Mr Hung concluded.

The annual gathering has further strengthened the co-operation among the maritime law enforcement agencies in Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macau
