To further improve motorcycle training in the Force, Police Driving and Traffic Training Division (PD&TTD) recently sent Station Sergeant (SSgt) Wu Man-keung, second-in-command of the division's Motorcycle Training Unit, to attend a four-week motorcycle training course at the New South Wales (NSW) Police College, Australia, between February and March this year. Attending the course with SSgt Wu under the coaching of three motorcycle instructors were three NSW police officers.

The training course has been designed for NSW Police Force's Highway Patrol Officers. As an entry requirement, SSgt Wu had to pass a half-day fitness assessment that included shuttle run, sit-up, push-up and flexibility exercise. The course provides officers with defensive motorcycle riding skills under operational conditions such as defensive positioning and perception of hazards.

In the first two weeks, training was mainly conducted inside the NSW driving training campus, covering, among others, cross-country riding, cone course and emergency braking. Following this, SSgt Wu practised with local police officers on public streets and highways in NSW, riding a 1 400 c.c. patrol motorcycle and covering between 400 and 800 km each day.

Commenting on this highly demanding course, SSgt Wu said: "Although I was exhausted each and every day, I was glad to have this precious opportunity to advance my driving techniques and skills. When sharing experience with my course instructors, I gained an insight into a highly professional motorcycle-training course. I am going to share the knowledge and skills I have learned with my fellow motorcycle driving instructors in the Force."
