CE, CP saddened by death of Station Sergeant

The Chief Executive, Mr Donald Tsang, Commissioner Tsang Wai-hung and senior government officials have mourned the death of Station Sergeant (SSgt) Lau Chi-kin, who made the ultimate sacrifice whilst taking part in an operation to deal with a protest staged by a man on top of a footbridge in Central in the morning of June 15. They also have sent their deepest condolences to SSgt Lau's family.

SSgt Lau sustained serious injuries when he fell from the footbridge to a walkway, and later died of the injuries in hospital.

Speaking to the media shortly before his departure to Australia in the evening, the Chief Executive said: "This morning an experienced Station Sergeant met with an accident and died whilst carrying out his duties. The Government and the Police Force are deeply saddened by this incident. We will take care of his family
."

"The Force Welfare Services Group is in touch with Mr Lau's family and will make every effort to provide assistance," said CP.

The Secretary for the Civil Service, Miss Denise Yue, the Secretary for Food and Health, Dr York Chow, and the Acting Secretary for Security, Mr Lai Tung-kwok, have also extended their condolences to SSgt Lau's family.

Miss Yue said: "On behalf of the Civil Service, I offer my deepest condolences to his family. The Civil Service Bureau has been in contact with the Police Force and will make every effort to help Mr Lau's family."

"I am saddened to learn of the news. The Government will give every possible assistance to the family members of the deceased," said Mr Lai.

SSgt Lau, aged 49, joined the Force in 1981. He was attached to the Central District Crime Squad. He is survived by his wife and a daughter.

A Force Funeral with full Police honours for SSgt Lau will be held at the Universal Funeral Parlour in Hung Hom on July 14.
