Station Sergeant (SSgt) Leung Ah-sum joined the Force in 1974 and will retire next month after serving in the Force for 36 years. For him, June 20 was one of the most memorable days in his police career when he presented to his son, Chung-yin, Roy, a letter confirming his promotion to the rank of Sergeant. Both of them come from the Marine deck stream, and upon his promotion, Roy was transferred from Marine Harbour Division to Marine South Division.

SSgt Leung has spent the majority of his police life in Marine Region. Over the years, SSgt Leung has garnered experience of "influx of Vietnamese refugees", "hostile confrontation with smuggling Tai Fai", "handing-over of sovereignty in 1997" and "the new ethos of the Region - Versatile Marine Police Response", which is an integrated maritime response to any incident in the waters of Hong Kong.

"In my early sea-going days, marine police needed to work onboard police vessels made of wood. We never thought of having the luxury of air-conditioning while working onboard," he recalled.

Roy has had 15 years of service. Before his promotion, he was attached to the Task Force Sub-unit of Marine Harbour Division. He noted: "Now at work, my father is my supervisor. At home he is a kind father and grandfather. He takes good care of my daughter, who is nine years old."

Presenting the promotion letter, SSgt Leung told his son: "The letter comes with the heavy responsibility of a supervisory officer. Don't let me down". "Yes, Sir," Roy replied.
