As part of the Force's commitment to conserving the environment through good practices and use of new technology, the Sha Tin District (STDIST) Green Management Team has made much progress over the last year.

A wide range of areas are now being monitored after the District Green Committee utilised the advice available to building mangers via the E-Green web link on POINT. Savings are being achieved in paper, electricity and water consumption. Recycling levels have also increased, and STDIST is operating several electrical vehicles for patrol.

Tin Sum Division (TSDIV) has been used as a trial unit for the application of new technology. The Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) gave technical support in fitting more efficient lighting in the compound and offices. Office and changing room users have also been made aware of how they can make a contribution.

Last year, TSDIV Senior Inspector (SIP) Chan Man-wai worked closely with EMSD to look into measures for environmental conservation. The Administrative Sub-unit Commander, SIP Wu Kar-yin, has reported that SIP Chan's initiatives are now paying off when over 30 percent saving in electricity consumption has been recorded recently, compared with the same period last year.

Taking this development a step further, TSDIV has recently formed a Divisional Green Committee, which is chaired by the Assistant Divisional Commander Administration, and its members are officers who volunteer to help conserve the environment. The divisional committee will report to the District Green Committee and the former's initial ideas look promising.

In the coming year the District Green Committee will assess the success achieved in TSDIV and begin similar work in Sha Tin and Ma On Shan Divisions.
