Appreciation Corner

Dear Mr Editor,

I am writing to express my family's appreciation of the assistance provided by the police officers who attended to my "999" report on July 11, particularly PC 34304 and 12385 of Tsing Yi Police Division.

My 84-year-old father migrated to Nevada, USA, in the 1980's after his retirement. Despite his age and distance, he still tries to stay in touch with his old friends in Hong Kong.

On the morning of July 11, my father phoned me up and said with anxiety that he had been calling his friend living in a public housing estate on Tsing Yi Island over the past few days, but there was no response. Since his friend was also over 80 years of age and was living alone, my father had reasons to worry. I assured him I would follow up and told him not to worry too much. I made a few more calls but they remained unanswered, and by 9.30 pm the same day when there was still no response to my calls, I made a "999" report.

The "999" officer who took my report was very helpful and assured me Fire Services Department personnel and police officers would both be dispatched. To my surprise, within just a matter of minutes after dialling "999", I was already talking on the phone to PC 34304 and his partner, PC 12385, both of whom were handling my report and had already got in touch with Housing Department staff and security staff during their investigation. Whilst being totally amazed at the efficiency of the public service machinery, I was even more impressed with the polite manner and attitude of PC 34304 when he explained to me over the subsequent phone calls the current situation and the results of the enquiries conducted by him and his partner. It was ascertained at that stage that my father's friend collapsed on the last Lunar New Year Eve outside his home and passed away soon after admission to hospital. As there were still loose bits of information that needed clarification, the officers waited patiently at the scene whilst I talked to my father on distance calls.

I am certain the Hong Kong Police, having thousands of reports to handle on a daily basis, must have guidelines for frontline units to handle their cases in a professional and competent manner. In this case, the said officers shone with professionalism and competence, for which I am grateful.

Last but not least, a big thank you to Tsing Yi Police Division, Asia's Finest, Asia's Pride.

T. Cheung

(Editor's Note: The officers praised in this letter are PC Wong Kin-yeung and PC Mui Man-wan, both of PSU 2 TYDIV)
