Police College ran a five-day Physical Training Instructor Refresher's Course on its Aberdeen Campus from July 11 to 15- the first course of this nature since the college was established in 2006. A total of 15 trainees, who had been trained as Physical Training Instructor (PTI), received instruction given by the staff of the Physical Training and First Aid Unit of the Foundation Training Centre.

The course has been designed to update the trainees' professional knowledge of physical fitness and to ensure a high competence in physical training, consisting of both theory and practical sessions. The theory session introduced such foundation knowledge as "Exercise Physiology", "Health Appraisal", "Safety and Injury Prevention" and "Exercise Programming". The trainees then applied in the practical session what they had learned like "Team Building", "Weight Training Exercise", "Running Training Exercises" and "Life-saving Training". At the end of the course, they sat for a life-saving examination for the Bronze Medallion life-saving qualification.

Since 2010, Police College has been running a number of PTI Courses in order to replenish the number of trained officers in the Force. To date a total of 30 officers have been trained, and two of them have been chosen to take up PTI post.

To train a sufficient number of PTI and update their knowledge of fitness and training activities management, PTI and PTI Refresher courses will be organised bi-annually, with the next PTI course scheduled for mid 2012. The objective of the courses is not only to train up competent PTIs but also create a pool of professional trainers who are competent in running physical activities within their formations.

Officers interested in taking up the challenge of a PTI and in contributing to the physical fitness of Force members are welcome to apply for the course.
