Project "Brick Breaker", jointly organised by Kwun Tong District (KTDIST) and the Outreaching Team of Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, has formally started. The project is sponsored by Social Welfare Department and will run until February next year.

KTDIST Commander Chau Cho-kei, Tseung Kwan O Divisional Commander Chan Wing-mee, Group Supervisor of Hong Kong Federation of Youth Groups, Mr Chan Man-ho, and a representative of Social Welfare Department officiated the opening ceremony of the project in Lei Yu Mun Sports Centre.

As the adolescent population in Tseung Kwan O keeps rising and the summer vacation has just started, KTDIST mounted the project to handle youth street gangs and youngsters hanging out on streets in a bid to prevent them from being misled by undesirable elements. All the 70 youngsters participating in the project are involved in the cases being followed by the Outreaching Team.

By teaching the youngsters Kung Fu, two police volunteers, Mr To Sing-chi and Mr Chung Ho-lam, instilled in them senses of justice and respect, and helped them distinguish right from wrong. The police volunteers also helped the youngsters set positive goals for life, build up self-esteem and stay away from crime and drugs.

As tackling youth crime is one of its operational priorities, KTDIST has adopted a four-pronged approach, which comprises stepping up patrol, strengthening intelligence collection, publicity and engaging stakeholders. Project "Brick Breaker" underlines the importance of multi-agency co-operation in tackling youth problems.
