A 13-member delegation from the Technology and Information Bureau under the Ministry of Public Security (MPS), led by the Bureau's Deputy Inspector-General, Mr Sun Pilong, visited the Force on August 16.

At a seminar held at Liaison Bureau for officers from the bureaux of Operations Wing and Crime Wing, the Technology and Information Bureau's researcher, Mr He Rixing, introduced the latest development of the Geographical Information System (GIS) on police work on the Mainland.

From 1980 to 1998, Mr Sun worked at the Communication Centre under the General Office of the MPS, engaging in technological management of information communication. Besides being the Deputy Inspector-General of the Technology and Information Bureau since 2006, he is also the Officer-in-Charge of the Police Geographical Information System (PGIS) Project Office, responsible mainly for the overall planning, technical guidance, application and demonstration of the nation-wide PGIS.

On use of GIS technology in public security and police work, Mr He elaborated on development prospects and pin-pointed the critical techniques required and difficulties involved. At the seminar, he shared with the audience his experience of applying the GIS in major policing assignments.

"The GIS has become more important for police work, especially for crowd management, criminal analysis and operation planning. Mainland Police authorities will continue keeping in close contact with Hong Kong Police and overseas counterparts for experience-sharing in cutting-edge technologies to enhance law enforcement," Mr Sun said.

Officers from Technology Crime Division and Crime Support respectively presented the latest trend of computer crime and application of the Major Incident Investigation and Disaster Support System on police work.
