Brilliant sunlight brought more than 100 mentors and mentees of the Police Mentorship Programme (PMP) 2011/12 to Police College for their Summer Day Camp on August 6.

Organised by Recruitment Division with the assistance of four mentees, the annual camp offered a wide range of exercises and activities, including a fitness enhancement programme, guided tour of the Tactical Training Complex, group discussion and leadership game, which aimed at strengthening the bond between mentors and mentees. The mentors acted as facilitators for group exercises, provided coaching and shared work experience with the mentees. The mentees also made the most of the occasion to beef up their leadership and problem-solving skills and physical fitness.

The climax of day came in the afternoon when Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Chau Kwok-leung, Head Mentor Chief Superintendent Chung Hung-fung and Deputy Head Mentor Chief Superintendent Pauline Ng joined the participants.

Welcoming the mentees, Mr Chau said: "I know that 71 mentees are now working on summer job attachment to various police formations. Today's programme lets you recognise your potential so as to prepare yourself for future challenges. I sincerely hope you would enjoy the various activities despite your busy work schedule."

Mr Chau also encouraged the mentees: "I'm sure everybody agrees that police work carries sublime meanings. Police officers regard provision of timely services to the public most important. To maintain law and order, we will not hesitate to take on responsibility and challenges, and our officers, in bad or good weather, will remain steadfast for their job. Although you have not joined the Force yet, I believe we are sharing the same vision and are doing our best to keep Hong Kong a stable society."

The guests then enjoyed a slide show on the activities, which captured the enthusiasm and happiness of the mentors and mentees.

A sharing session was held, joined by Acting Senior Superintendent Ho Yun-sing, Superintendent Ho Kin-man and six ex-mentees. Among the ex-mentees, three are working as Inspectors and the rest have just been appointed Probationary Inspectors (PI). The PIs shared with the mentees the joy and challenges of their basic training as well as experiences of their frontline jobs. The others offered advice on how to prepare for the PI selection interviews. All the mentees took the chance to seek guidance on how to develop their potentials, cope with the PI selection and take on challenges in life.

The mentees regarded the sharing session as enlightenment as they had direct dialogues with the senior officers and junior inspectors at the same time, gained a better understanding of their own potentials and were in a better position to plan for their studies and careers.

The mentees are grateful to the mentors for their coaching, and to Recruitment Division for organising the Day Camp. They also appreciated the briefing given by Fitness Training Instructors and Weapon Training Division officers, which gave them a foretaste of the foundation training for PIs at Police College.
