To tackle juvenile delinquency, New Territories North Regional Headquarters (NTN RHQ) carried out Operation "Megastrength" during the last two summer vacations when officers guided youngsters to the right track and encouraged them to establish a correct life outlook by staying away from crimes and drugs. Under Operation "Megastrength", NTN RHQ not only maintained a high strategic profile for anti-crime patrols and law enforcement actions, but also enhanced prevention, education and publicity by securing co-operation from the secondary and primary schools in the region, parent-teacher associations, associations of school heads, school social workers, youth groups and non-government organisations. A series of events were organised for young people in the summer vacations, for example football coaching, anti-drug abuse day camp, anti-crime seminars, volunteer programme and anti-crime booth activities. Achievements of the operation in the past two years have been shown by steady decreases in violent, drug and triad-related crimes involving young people. Through the activities held with non-government organisations, contacts with nearly 75 000 young people have been made, and more than 74 000 copies of a leaflet have been distributed to make youngsters more aware of the fight against crimes and drugs. Success of the operation has won praises and support by the general public. NTN RHQ hosted the closing ceremony of Operation "Megastrength 2011" at Kwong Fuk Football Ground in Tai Po on September 20, to mark the achievements in combatting juvenile crimes this year. The two soccer matches held during the ceremony underscored the common vision of fighting crime shared by the Force and society, as well as the healthy lifestyles being pursued by young people. Senior officers from the region, led by their Regional Commander Austin Kerrigan, challenged a team formed by local leaders, including JPC Honorary Presidents, District Fight Crime Committee members and Village Representatives. Mr Kerrigan scored a goal before the final whistle blew and the exciting match ended in a 2-2 draw. A friendly game that underscores friendship as well as the common vision of fighting crime
