Police dogs Grau and Coby received Outstanding Service Award from Dr Dog, a charitable organisation, on October 15 for their services to the community.

Senior Police Constable (SPC) Alex Poon and German Shepherd Grau were posted to Wong Tai Sin District after completing training together in August 2009. In the past two years, they patrolled together and won six compliments from Regional Commander and Divisional Commander.

The first arrest made by Alex and Grau, though not very dramatic, was a honourable mention. They heard a noise whilst patrolling on a staircase inside a building. As they approached the source of the noise quietly, a man ran off upon seeing them. The pair gave chase and stopped the man. As Grau kept the suspect at bay with a stern look and barking, Alex seized eight grammes of ketamine on him. This was how Alex and Grau secured their first compliment.

As for Labrador Coby, his handler is SPC Ip Kwok-wing. They have been paired up for six years and have been called out to recover drugs, locate missing persons and sniff out crimes. In an infanticide case in 2010, Coby led detectives from a discarded newly born baby in the street to an apartment. The young mother was located and the case was detected within hours. In another notable missing person case in 2005, they assisted in locating and rescuing an elderly man in a watercourse in Border District. Working irregular hours and under almost all weather conditions, Coby is never tired of serving the community with his handler.
