Force Escort Group 25 years to the fore

The Force Escort Group (FEG) was formally established 25 years ago in preparation for the Royal Visits, in 1986, of Princess Alexandra and Her Majesty the Queen, Queen Elizabeth. Prior to the establishment of the FEG, officers from Traffic Hong Kong Island and Police Driving School conducted escorts on an ad-hoc basis. On those days, they were generally known as the "Royal Escort Team".

This year marks the 25th Anniversary of the FEG, and to celebrate this occasion former and serving FEG members have come up with the idea of staging an exhibition at the Police Museum to highlight the Force's motorcade escort history. In May this year, they set up a Working Group with the Police Museum to research into and retrieve historical records; recover and renovate exhibits; revisited major events and interview veteran members.

The Working Group has uncovered many interesting exhibits and photographs as well as informative texts, all of which will be on display in the exhibition open to the public from December 13 to April 30, next year.

The Working Group comprises two former Officers Commanding FEG, Mr Ian Stenton (retired Senior Superintendent) and Superintendent Martin Cadman, who is Force Motor Transport Officer; current FEG Kowloon West Team Leader, Senior Inspector Damien Chan, former FEG Kowloon West Team member, Sergeant Kevin Cheung, and current FEG Headquarters Team member, Sergeant Kenneth Tse. The Force Curator, Dr Lam Kam-yuen, is an adviser for the Working Group.

The exhibition is expected to be of interest to not only FEG members but also the general public who may have seen FEG members in action but do not really understand who they are or exactly what they are doing. The exhibition will also underscore the important tasks of frontline units.
