Marine Region rolled out the Marine Police Mentorship Programme (MPMP) with an inauguration ceremony at Marine Headquarters on November 19, in a bid to attract young people to join the Force and subsequently Marine Region. Officiating at the ceremony were Director of Personnel and Training Ma Wai-luk, Assistant Commissioner (Personnel) Chau Kwok-leung, Chief Superintendent (Human Resources) Ng Tsui Fung-ying and Superintendent (Recruit) Ho Kin-man. In line with the Force's proactive recruitment strategy, Marine Region has adopted a strategic approach to ensure that right candidates would be recruited. By reaching out to tertiary institutions, Hong Kong Sea School (HKSS), Maritime Services Training Institute (MSTI) and Hong Kong Sea Cadet Corps (HKSCC), Marine Region hopes to recruit candidates with an interest in pursuing a career in Marine Police as mentees. With guidance and inspiration by their Mentors and Mentor Assistants, Marine Region hopes mentees would join the Force and subsequently Marine Region. The ceremony began with a brief introduction of the rationale behind the MPMP, followed by signing of a Letter of Intent for Co-operation by Marine Regional Commander Lau Yip-shing, Chairman of the Board of Management of HKSS, Mr Cowen Chiu; Regional Commander of Hong Kong Island of HKSCC, Mr Fung Chi-on, and Manager of MSTI, Mr Yeung Pui-keung, marking commencement of a strategic partnership between Marine Region and the participating organisations. In his speech, Mr Lau spoke of the unique nature of Marine Region and its plans. Speaking of the primary objectives of the MPMP, he reminded mentors that their important role in the programme was to provide mentees with information about police work and the related challenges so as to stimulate their interest in pursuing a career in the Force. Following the speech was presentation of Certificate of Appointment to 12 Mentors, including Head Mentor, Superintendent Joseph Li, and Deputy Head Mentor, Chief Inspector Law Ka-hong, as well as 20 Mentor Assistants. They will act as role models for mentees and help them with their personal developments and knowledge of marine policing. After this, the Mentors and Mentor Assistants shared their knowledge and good practices with all attendants from the participating organisations, in a bid to forge co-operation and partnership. The ceremony concluded with a "Boat Show" at Marine Headquarters to introduce Marine Region's fleet of vessels.
