As part of its continuous effort to help youth-at-risk, Yau Tsim District (YTDIST) has rolled out two initiatives, Operation "Retriever" and Juvenile Crime Awareness Seminar. Operation 'Retriever'
Operation "Retriever" is the concept of "a harm reduction approach". With the participation of the Yau Tsim Mong District Fight Crime Committee, Correctional Services Department, Social Welfare Department, Department of Health and Non-government organisations such as Hong Kong Playground Association, the two-day operation was conducted on November 25 and 26. The operation encompassed a range of activities, with the objectives of identifying young persons who had fallen prey to crimes, found themselves engaged in crimes, or in circumstances where their safety and well being may give rise to concern. The operation started on November 25 when members of the Yau Tsim Mong District Fight Crime Committee distributed copies of anti-drug leaflet in the bar areas of Tsim Sha Tsui. After this, officers from YTDIST and Kowloon West Regional Headquarters visited or raided places frequented by young person. The operation caters for the well being of the individuals. At the end of the operation, a total of 113 minors were accompanied back to Yau Ma Tei and Tsim Sha Tsui Police Stations and their parents or guardians were informed to collect the youngsters. Furthermore, Care and Protection Orders were applied from courts in 11 cases, and seven local pharmacies were raided, leading to the arrest of five persons for selling Part I poisons and for related offences. Awareness Seminar
YTDIST hosted the half-day Juvenile Crime Awareness Seminar on December 2 in Tsim Sha Tsui Police Station for school headmasters, deputy headmasters and members of the Yau Tsim Mong District Fight Crime Committee. The workshop featured two main themes: "Compensated Dating" and "Youth Drug Abuse". Besides speakers from Narcotics Bureau and Crime Kowloon West, representatives from the North District Hospital also presented an informative overview. The Chairlady of the Yau Tsim Mong Headmaster Association, Ms Mimi Cheung, has described the seminar as "a step in the right direction for enhancing awareness by all parties". YTDIST Commander Cheung Kwai-kee is pleased that the initiatives had achieved their intended objectives. "I hope similar initiatives in the future would provide more opportunities for developing a 'caring' partnership between the Force and other key stakeholders in the interests of young persons," he said. YTDIST hopes to further develop the caring partnership |
