Marine Regional Commander Lau Yip-shing opened the e-Learning Suite of the Marine Police Training School on November 30, signifying his Region's continuing commitment to supporting frontline units by using computer technology to enhance officers' professionalism. The Suite has been developed as the backbone of the Marine Police Training School's e-Learning strategy to facilitate learning effectiveness and boost training efficiency. The Suite is loaded with a computer-aided programme covering seamanship, navigation and engineering to supplement conventional classroom and practical training with e-facilitation through networked interaction between instructor and trainees. Assistant Force Training Officers Edward Lo and Gary Kwok both agree that with opening of the Suite, learning of the more complex work situations would be more effective. For example, the 3D simulations of the engine room provide a safe training environment for trainees to learn how to deal with emergency situations such as flooding in engine room or fire in generator room. In addition, the scenario-based exercises contained in training packages help officers master their navigation skills before any practical training or testing is carried out onboard a vessel. Mr Lau was very pleased with the successful implementation of the e-Learning Suite, and was impressed with the quality of the training packages. Force Training Officer (Marine), George Tang emphasised that the e-learning Suite provides a safe and controllable environment to conduct simulated exercises, adding that this would make use of training resources more flexible. However, he stressed that practical training at sea was still an important and integral part of marine training. The project officer, Chief Inspector Ruby Chu from the training school, pointed out: "To tie in with the Marine Region Action Plan, the e-Learning Suite provides a very good platform to further brush up officers' professional qualities. Marine Police Training School will continue to refine, and build on the success of, existing training programmes to keep pace with the latest developments in e-Learning."
