PNC members, medical professionals enhance
rapport |

In the past 30 years, the Police Negotiation Cadre (PNC) has dealt with many hostage incidents, domestic barricading situations and potential suicide cases. On some occasions, cases were referred to other government departments, such as Hospital Authority (HA), for follow-up actions. To further enhance rapport and co-operation with medical officers, PNC held a half-day workshop for over 50 medical professionals of the Prince of Wales Hospital at Police Officers' Club late last November. The workshop covered negotiation lectures, case discussion and sharing of knowledge and experience. To demonstrate negotiation skills, PNC members played the roles of doctor, nurse and patient's family member. The "doctor" and "nurse" dealt with an emotional "family member" and demonstrated the effective use of empathetic listening and negotiation skills to resolve an emergency and save lives. The workshop also offered a good opportunity for PNC members and medical professionals, through interactive discussion, to advance their active listening and negotiation skills, professionalism, mutual understanding and coordination. Following the workshop, Dr Dai Lok-kwan of the Prince of Wales Hospital commented: "The Police Force and the Hospital Authority share the same mission in serving our community with pride and care. PNC saves lives at critical moments, while our Patient Relations Unit tries to resolve disputes. Active listening and empathy are vital under these circumstances. We are very impressed by the sincerity and compassion of members of the PNC - a team all of us are proud of in Hong Kong."
