"Two minutes is too long. I felt so embarrassed... I wanted a hole to open up and swallow me...," said Mr James Elms, a retired Senior Superintendent, when he addressed the opening of an "Extended Interview Workshop for Potential Officer (English Communication)" at Police Officers' Club on November 16 at the invitation of the Police English Club.

Mr Elms told the 40 club members attending this tailor-made workshop that a candidate might find two minutes too long if he or she failed to present their ideas clearly and concisely in English.

To enhance the competitiveness of members wishing to attend the Probationary Inspection Selection Extended Interview (EI), the workshop offered skills of communicating in English and practical exercises in three sessions: experience-sharing, impromptu talk exercise and group discussion.

In the experience-sharing session, two promotees told of their success stories and offered tips on passing the EI and improving fluency in English.

In the impromptu talk exercise, three club members volunteered to join the exercise, and each chose a topic and delivered a two-minute presentation in English. Their performances were assessed by Mr Elms and two other assessors, Superintendent Wyman Lee Wai-man and Senior Inspector Paul Lewis. All the assessors also offered valuable advice.

The group discussion exercise saw members being divided into six groups for discussion on the current issues related to the Force and society. As a result, they improved their skills of discussion in English and again received valuable advice by the assessors.
