Last December was a very busy time for members of the Police Mini Rugby Section. Besides their normal Sunday morning training, the kids had the honour of meeting very special VIP visitors on the pitch. First up was the visit of the First Minister of Scotland, Mr Alex Salmond, and the Secretary of Home Affairs, Mr Tsang Tak-sing, on December 10. The visit was part of the ongoing initiatives by the Hong Kong and Scottish governments to strengthen ties. Mr Salmond and Mr Tsang were met on the steps of the Police Sports and Recreation Club (PSRC) by a guard of honour made up of kids from the Police Mini Rugby Section, sporting their smart new playing kit. Following speeches and exchanges of souvenirs, the VIPs went out onto the pitch where they enjoyed watching the kids training as well as Operation Breakthrough youth teams playing 7s. The day culminated with a seven-a-side match between a Disciplined Services team and local premiership side Hong Kong Scottish, with the teams being led out by a police piper and the kids from the Police Mini Rugby Section. All had a great day. The next important visit was on December 18 when a very special Santa Claus visited the kids during their final training session before the holiday break. Santa brought a sack load of goodies for the excited children who couldnt believe their luck to meet Santa in the flesh. He also proved a great hit with mummies and daddies too. Since being formed in June 2011 as part of a healthy lifestyle initiative by the Police Rugby Club to offer a summer training programme to sons and daughters of Force members, the Police Mini Rugby Section has gone from strength to strength. Since the first nine children turned up for the first training session, close to 90 kids have signed up and more are joining almost every week. Mini Rugby offers an excellent way for children to stay healthy and make new friends in a safe environment. Training, conducted by qualified coaches and members of the Police Rugby Club, is open to both boys and girls up to the age of 11. Training is held at PSRC every Sunday between 10 am and 11.30 am. Those interested in enrolling their children in mini rugby or playing rugby themselves may contact the Police Rugby Club by emailing hkprugby@gmail.com. |
