PDBC makes another Guinness World Record

In the heat of counting down in Times Square, Lan Kwai Fong, Canton Road and shopping malls in various districts, Police Dragon Boat Club (PDBC) broke a Guinness World Record in Shatin Shing Mun River for the second time.

PDBC first made a Guinness World Record in 2004 when 22 paddlers, drummer and steersman paddled 110 km in 24 hours non-stop - the longest distance ever covered by a dragon boat. In that event, PDBC raised $240 000 for building a school in Inner Mongolia.

This year, the Guinness World Record 24 hours Dragon Boat Relay was organised by the Hong Kong Dragon Boat Association and a volunteer group - GP15. The event sought to raise funds for U-Hearts to provide education for children in rural areas on the Mainland. A school will be built in Cangwu, Guangxi, and financial assistance will be offered to children who can hardly afford school tuition.

The relay started at 10:30 am on New Year Eve and finished same time on the New Year day. PDBC and other 17 teams successfully made a new World Record of a 277 km-relay in 24 hours. PDBC was also honoured to be the boat paddling across the year 2011 to 2012. With the countdown clock bringing down the last 10 seconds and the countdown cheers were roaring, PDBC paddled their Gold Dragon through the stage and made a "Boat Salute" to everyone at the venue.

The event has raised over $700 000 for U-Hearts. With support from generous donors, PDBC won the prize for the "Highest Donation" with over $160 000 raised.

Those interested in joining PDBC may contact Ms Brenda Fung on 6022-4522.
