Tai Po District (TPDIST) held a year-end briefing on law and order in Tai Po Police Station and Sheung Shui Junior Police Call (JPC) Clubhouse on February 2 and 3 respectively in a bid to forge closer ties with the community and acquaint them with police work.

During the briefing in Tai Po, District Commander, Chief Superintendent (CSP) Paul Stripp, together with Deputy District Commander, Senior Superintendent (SSP) Chan Yee-lai, and key management officers, summarised the effectiveness of various policing initiatives, operations and projects before an audience comprising chairmen and members of Tai Po and North District Councils, chairman and members of Tai Po District Fight Crime Committee, as well as the District Officers of Tai Po and North District. Statistics show that in 2011 the total number of crimes decreased by seven per cent in Tai Po and slightly increased by three per cent in Sheung Shui Division, compared with the figures in 2010.

In the subsequent question-and-answer session, the audience complimented the officiers for their performances and pledged support for TPDIST's "Project Eyes and Ears", "Project Rural Ambassador", "Project Y-Generation" and "Neighbourhood Liaison Station". In the views of the audience, the projects had motivated the community to help police fight crimes.

A total of 15 villages in Tai Po and Sheung Shui are taking part in "Project Rural Ambassador", with 53 village representatives and villagers promoting crime prevention as Rural Ambassadors.  The project, rolled out last August, targets crimes in villages, such as burglary and theft of vehicles. In seven of the participating villages, the overall number of crimes decreased by as much as 53 per cent last year, compared with the figures in 2010. TPDIST plans to extend "Project Rural Ambassador" to more villages.

The audience also praised "Neighbourhood Liaison Station" for enhancing public-police communication and providing an extra channel for the public to express their views on the law and order in the district.

The Chairman of Tai Po District Fight Crime Committee, Mr Kwok Wing-keung, praised School Liaison Officers for giving talks and organising crime prevention activities in schools as well as forging close liaison with schools.

At the briefing in Sheung Shui JPC Clubhouse, CSP Stripp summed up last year's crime situation in Sheung Shui Division.

The Chairman of North District Council, Mr So Sai-chi, paid tribute to officers of Tai Po Police Community Relations Office and Sheung Shui Division for conducting joint operations in Sheung Shui Railway Station with other government departments to stamp out smuggling and illegal workers.

CSP Stripp is greatly encouraged by the audience's response to the briefing, and has passed on the guests' compliments to the officers concerned.
