Traffic Branch is bringing in experts from overseas in an effort to further enhance traffic policing in Hong Kong. Under a Traffic Policing Excellence Series, the overseas experts, along with local professionals, will share their expertise and experience in various fields at workshops and discussion forums.

The inaugural presentation of the series, known as "Application of Technology to Traffic Policing - Overseas Experiences and Observations", was held at Traffic Branch Headquarters on May 9. More than 100 officers from various units, including Traffic, Crime, Operations, and Information Systems Wing, attended the presentation, along with senior officials from Transport and Housing Bureau, Transport Department, and Electrical and Mechanical Services Department, as well as Dr Eric Cheng, Chairman of the Road Safety Campaign Committee, Road Safety Council.

The first expert for the series is Mr Trevor Hall from the UK Road Safety Support (RSS), which is a leading organisation in the field of traffic policing. Affiliated to the UK Association of Chief Police Officers, the RSS has had the full backing of the UK Department for Transport, and provides specialist advisory service to both the UK and overseas road safety organisations, including law enforcement agencies and the UK local authorities in the areas of traffic enforcement, enforcement technology, court and prosecution, and training.

Commenting on the presentation, Superintendent Gordon Wan said: "The Traffic Policing Excellence Series offers a golden opportunity for officers to learn from our overseas partners how to advance our level of traffic policing."

Mr Hall also took the opportunity to present an RSS Membership Certificate to the Force on behalf of the RSS, making the Force, with effect from April, being the first overseas law enforcement agency granted with an associate membership status.

With this status, the Force will be able to access overseas experience in traffic policing as well as the UK technical support. Traffic Branch Superintendent Steve Baker has been appointed Force Liaison Officer with the RSS.
