Liaison Bureau (LB), in conjunction with the Consulate General of France in Hong Kong and Macao and the French International School, conducted an anti-drug education programme consisting of a talk in the school and a visit to the Hei Ling Chau Addiction Treatment Centre on May 9 and 18 respectively. The programme aimed at disseminating anti-drug messages to students of the school and enhancing their knowledge of drug abuse and mental health.

On May 9, LB and Narcotics Bureau (NB) officers visited the French International School and NB Senior Inspector Cheng Chun-kit gave a talk to 40 Form 3 students on the different types of drug abuse in Hong Kong, trends of drug abuse, and the laws on control of legal and illegal drugs in Hong Kong. The talk helped the students understand better the serious consequences of taking, or trafficking in, dangerous drugs.

On May 18, a party of 10 students aged 17 to 18 visited the Correctional Services Department's Hei Ling Chau Addiction Treatment Centre, accompanied by LB and CSD officers, as well as the Attaché of Police of the French Consulate, Mr Jean-Christophe Marten-Perolin. In a sharing session, the students heard the first hand accounts by two young inmates of how they were tempted to experience with dangerous drugs and how they eventually ended up at the treatment centre. One of the inmates told the students: "Never take any drugs. I'm very sorry to my family for what I have done. I want to turn a new leaf and I'm working hard for my vocational training here. I want to become a chef after my release."

The programme has hammered home to the students the messages of combatting dangerous drugs, staying away from drugs, and supporting rehabilitation work. In particular, they enjoyed the visit to the treatment centre and the sharing session with the inmates.

"The programme has succeeded in engaging the French community in Hong Kong and provided special educational opportunities for the French International School students," said LB Detective Inspector Homer Lam.

Besides a talk, the programme also includes a visit to Correctional Services Department's addiction treatment centre
