At the invitation of the Psychological Services Group, Dr Ricky Szeto Wing-fu, Executive Director of Hung Fook Tong Holdings Limited, delivered a talk at a Balances and Wisdom Seminar on May 10 to over 200 Force members, including regular and auxiliary police officers and Recruit Police Constables.

Dr Szeto pointed out that he came across a turning point of his life when he was out of job and suffered a great loss in investment, but he learned the importance of making adjustments in his life and work. Hence forward, he tried his best to get his job done without too much regard to reward. With this attitude, he became more happy and creative at work.

"Your perception decides where you can reach. Your attitude decides how high you can reach," Dr Szeto told the audience. With this attitude, he managed to create a successful career by re-packaging a traditional herbal tea into a popular healthy beverage brand, earning organisational honours for Hung Fook Tong.

Dr Szeto also shared with the audience his wisdom of cultivating happiness and wisdom.  "Don't let money limit your success. Some people don't understand the fragility of money which hardly brings us real happiness."  For him, real achievement is not aiming for "big and high", but finding the "meaning" of one's job.

Dr Szeto went on to say that there should be no difference in the importance of jobs. Once he "detested" selling herbal tea for living, but after a second thought, he realised if he had no respect for his job, he would never get it done. "Instead of blaming fate and others, I tried to love my job. I discovered that when looking from a different perspective, my job is very meaningful as it promotes the health of people. After identifying the meaning of my job, creativity naturally followed."

In his view, true happiness comes from being grateful and forgiving, spending more time with family and doing acts of kindness.

At the end of the seminar, Dr Szeto shared his motto for work: "Glorify your superior; honour your subordinates; and take up the job yourself."
