Everyone might have experience of purchasing some forms of insurance, for example life insurance, medical plans or accident insurance. However, what's insurance-related fraud? This type of fraud can be broadly divided into three categories: theft of a customer's premium; the intermediary manipulating a policy without the policy-holder's knowledge; and the policy-holder or the insured person makes a fraudulent claim.

The Insurance Fraud Focus Group has been set up to monitor and analyse the modus operandi and the latest trend of insurance-related fraud, and to formulate preventive measures and combatting strategies.

In the "Insurance-related Fraud" episode, a case was reconstructed based on a real one in which a man was sentenced to six months' imprisonment. The Police would like to appeal to the public not to brush with the law.

For more information and tips on prevention of insurance-related fraud, surf RTHK's website at www.rthk.org.hk for the episode of "Decoding Commercial Crimes" on the Police Magazine TV programme. The next topic of the "Decoding Commercial Crimes" series will be fraud related to employment and modelling.
